Changes in GP Contract - Out of Area Registrations

From 5 January 2015 patients can apply to register with any GP practice, even if they live outside the practice area. GP practices are then required to consider the patient application, on an individual basis, and decide whether registering the patient as an out of area patient, is clinically appropriate, practical and in the patient’s best interests; there is no right of appeal if the practice decides it is not appropriate.

Here, at The Exchange Surgery, we want to provide our patients with the best possible care, and we believe that access to urgent care, including in the out of hours period, home visits and the full range of community services is essential for all patients. For these reasons, it is very unlikely that we will accept any application to register from a patient living outside our practice area, as these services are provided on a geographical basis.

We will keep our position under constant review with the support of our Patient Participation Group to ensure we are meeting needs of the local population.
